Iran continues to witness widespread unrest as protests driven by economic distress spread across much of the country, with activists reporting a growing death toll and mass detentions. Rights groups monitoring the situation say the demonstrations, sparked by soaring prices and a collapsing currency, have entered a critical phase with serious human rights concerns.
According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, at least 35 people have lost their lives since the protests erupted more than a week ago. The organisation also claimed that security forces have detained over 1,200 individuals in what appears to be a sweeping crackdown aimed at containing the unrest. The group, which gathers information through networks operating inside Iran, has previously provided reliable accounts during periods of turmoil.
Among those killed are reportedly 29 protesters, four children, and two members of Iran’s security forces. The deaths have intensified anger on the streets as demonstrations continue to erupt across cities and towns. Semi-official Iranian media outlets acknowledged injuries among law enforcement personnel, reporting that hundreds of police officers and dozens of members of the Basij volunteer force have been wounded during clashes with demonstrators.
The protests, initially concentrated in Tehran, have now spread to nearly 25 of Iran’s 31 provinces, underlining the scale of public frustration. Protesters have voiced anger over rising inflation, unemployment, and the sharp decline of the Iranian rial, which has significantly eroded purchasing power and living standards.
Amid the escalating situation, India has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to avoid non-essential visits to Iran. The Ministry of External Affairs has also asked Indian nationals currently in the country to remain vigilant, steer clear of protest zones, and stay updated through official embassy channels. Indian residents on long-term visas have been advised to register with the Indian Embassy in Tehran to ensure timely assistance if required.
