In a surprising turn of events, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal has announced his intention to resign from his post within two days. Addressing party workers and supporters on Sunday, Kejriwal revealed his decision to step down, demanding fresh elections in Delhi and urging the Election Commission of India to hold Delhi's polls alongside the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections.

Kejriwal's announcement comes on the heels of a court case against him, from which he has been granted bail. However, the ongoing legal proceedings have led him to a significant decision. "Despite the court giving us bail, the case will continue. I spoke to my lawyers. Till the case does not end, I will not sit on the CM's seat," said Kejriwal. He added, "After two days, I am going to resign from the post of CM. I will not sit on the CM?s seat till the people elect me and send me to the seat again."

Notably, if Kejriwal follows through with his resignation two days from today, it will coincide with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday on September 17.

Kejriwal has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the current electoral schedule, emphasizing the need for an earlier election date. "The elections are supposed to be held in February. I demand elections be held in November with Maharashtra elections," Kejriwal stated. Until fresh elections are held, he has proposed that another AAP leader take over the role of Chief Minister. "In the next 2-3 days, a meeting of the MLAs will be held, where the next CM will be decided," he informed his supporters.

This announcement was Kejriwal's first public address following his release on bail from Delhi's Tihar Jail. Speaking to a crowd of party workers at the AAP office in New Delhi, he criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of targeting opposition Chief Ministers in states where they have lost elections. "They have a new formula now; they file cases against the CM of opposition parties in the states where they lost elections. They have filed cases against Siddaramaiah, and Pinarayi Vijayan?," he claimed. He further appealed to non-BJP Chief Ministers, stating, "I appeal to all non-BJP CMs that if there is a case against you, do not resign."

The coming days are likely to witness a flurry of political activity as AAP decides on its course of action following Kejriwal's resignation.
