The Supreme Court witnessed high drama on Monday when a 71-year-old lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during a hearing. Following the shocking incident, Kishore told the Hindustan Times that his act was guided by a “divine force” and that he felt “no remorse” for it.

Speaking to the media, Kishore declared, “I am ready to face jail. It would have been better if I was in jail. My family is very unhappy with what I did. They are unable to understand.” He clarified that he had “no political affiliation” and acted purely on personal conviction.

The lawyer, who reportedly targeted the CJI over his controversial “Lord Vishnu” remark made during a previous hearing in September, said he had been unable to sleep since then. “A PIL was filed in the Court of CJI on 16th Sept. The CJI mocked it and said — go and pray to the idol and tell it to restore its own head. When Nupur Sharma's matter came up before the Court, the Court said that she vitiated the atmosphere. When a matter related to our Sanatan Dharma comes up, SC passes such orders,” he told news agency ANI.

Kishore insisted he was fully sober at the time of the incident. “I was hurt... I was not inebriated; this was my reaction to his action... I am not fearful. I don't regret what happened,” he said.

Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) member Meenesh Dubey confirmed that Kishore, a temporary member of the Bar since 2011, showed “no guilt” and even “refused to apologise” for his act.

The incident has sparked intense debate within legal and political circles, with many calling for stronger courtroom security and disciplinary action against Kishore. However, the lawyer remained defiant, reiterating that his act was “divinely inspired” and that he stood by it “without fear or regret.”
