Mumbai and its surrounding districts reeled under continuous rainfall on Thursday night and into Friday morning, prompting multiple advisories from the city’s civic and disaster management authorities. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting continued downpour throughout the day, citizens have been urged to remain indoors and take necessary precautions.
Overnight, intense showers drenched several key areas across the city including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Byculla, Kurla, Mulund and Sion. The situation intensified early Friday as fresh rain spells hit these already saturated zones. Andheri subway was closed for vehicular movement due to water accumulation measuring nearly 1.5 feet, leading to traffic being diverted through Gokhale and Thackeray bridges.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s Disaster Management Department, in a 9:30 am update, warned of more heavy rainfall in the coming hours. “We request citizens to stay alert and not venture out unless absolutely necessary,” read their statement.
The IMD issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai, while Palghar remains under a yellow alert, indicating a moderate threat level. A nowcast bulletin released at 7:20 am forecasted moderate to heavy rainfall in isolated areas across Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) for the next three to four hours.
Rain clouds dominated the city skyline early Friday. Daytime temperatures are expected to stay near 30°C, with a minimum of 23°C. Coastal winds are blowing at speeds between 20–30 km/h, occasionally accompanied by gusts and thundershowers. A high tide measuring approximately 4.5 meters is anticipated later in the afternoon, which may worsen flooding in low-lying areas.
Despite heavy rains, Mumbai’s suburban train services continued to operate, albeit with slight delays. Local transport monitoring platform m-Indicator reported no major disruptions as of mid-morning. However, officials cautioned that waterlogged tracks could delay schedules later in the day.
Meanwhile, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport saw minor flight delays due to poor visibility and wet conditions. IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory alerting passengers of possible delays and asked them to leave early for the airport and keep tabs on real-time flight updates.
