Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi on Wednesday announced his resignation from the Congress party, saying he was “deeply hurt” and left with “no option” due to repeated humiliation and a lack of a supportive environment within the Assam unit.

Speaking soon after stepping down, Bordoloi made it clear that the decision was not sudden but the result of prolonged internal distress. “I am saddened to take this step, but I had no option left. I was mentally hurt and internally exhausted,” he said, highlighting the emotional strain he had been facing.

The veteran leader alleged that several senior figures in the party had insulted him on multiple occasions, which led to a growing sense of isolation. “I have dedicated my entire life to the Congress party, but today I feel completely alone,” Bordoloi stated, expressing the personal pain behind his exit.

Despite his strong words, Bordoloi acknowledged the Congress party’s role in shaping his political career. He said, “The Congress party has given me a lot. Whatever I am today is because of the Congress,” adding that his resignation was not out of disrespect for the party but due to the prevailing internal situation.

He further pointed out that the atmosphere within the Assam Congress had deteriorated significantly. “There is no environment in the Assam Congress for me to stay. That is why I resigned,” he said, making it clear that continuing in the party was no longer possible.

Bordoloi’s resignation is being viewed as a major setback for the Congress in Assam, especially at a time when the party is battling internal challenges and preparing for upcoming political contests. His exit could further weaken the party’s position in the state.

Sources indicate that Bordoloi is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) soon. There is also speculation that he may be fielded as a BJP candidate from the crucial Dispur Assembly constituency, a politically significant seat in the state capital region.

In a letter addressed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Bordoloi expressed “an overwhelming sense of sadness” while resigning from all posts, responsibilities, and privileges within the party.

He had earlier written to the Congress leadership raising concerns over the functioning of the Assam unit and its president Gaurav Gogoi. However, the central leadership did not respond publicly to his concerns, which may have further contributed to his decision.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hinted at a possible political shift, stating that if Bordoloi joins the BJP, he will be welcomed with due respect and could be given a ticket in the upcoming Assembly elections.

With this dramatic exit, Assam politics may be heading towards a significant shift, as all eyes are now on Bordoloi’s next move.
