Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday strongly condemned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his remarks following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. Gogoi accused the BJP leader of engaging in "petty politics" at a time when the nation should be united in demanding accountability from Pakistan.

“It is unfortunate that at a time when the entire country is united and wants a strong response against Pakistan for the terrorist-sponsored attack on Indian citizens, the BJP leaders in various states, including Assam, are indulging in petty politics,” said Gogoi, taking direct aim at Sarma's comments.

The Congress leader said Sarma’s statements were an insult to the memory of those who lost their lives in the heinous terror strike. “I think the Assam CM is insulting those who laid down their lives in Pahalgam. He is demeaning and diluting the Pahalgam tragedy,” Gogoi added.

He further advised Sarma to focus on the core issues facing Assam instead of politicizing a national tragedy. “He should be well advised to instead focus on the real issues that affect the people of Assam,” Gogoi stated.

The remarks come amid a wave of political statements across party lines following the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, with the Centre stepping up its diplomatic and security measures against Pakistan. The Opposition has, however, raised concerns over politicizing national security for electoral gains.
