The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made significant moves in the investigation of the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital by arresting the hospital's former principal, Sandip Ghosh, and a police officer on Saturday. Ghosh, who was already in judicial custody until September 23 for a separate financial irregularities probe, faces new charges related to the alleged delay in registering the FIR and missing evidence in the case. The police officer, Tala Police Station SHO Abhijit Mandal, has also been detained.
The CBI's investigation intensified after a second round of polygraph tests on Ghosh, conducted on August 26, aimed at unraveling the circumstances surrounding the doctor's death. The Calcutta High Court has granted the CBI three weeks to provide a progress report on the investigation, which is due on September 17.
The body of the 31-year-old doctor was discovered in a seminar hall at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Autopsy reports confirmed that she had been brutally raped and murdered. The BJP has accused Ghosh of authorizing renovation work near the crime scene on August 10, just a day after the victim's death. Union Minister and West Bengal BJP Chief Sukanta Majumdar shared a letter purportedly signed by Ghosh that authorized the renovation. The BJP has alleged that this move was an attempt to tamper with the crime scene, though the Police Commissioner has denied such claims.
In addition to the arrests, the CBI has alleged that Sandip Ghosh was part of a "criminal nexus" involved in "wrongful gains." The agency had previously arrested two vendors in connection with financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital, further deepening the investigation's scope.
