BJP, Congress Unite Behind Government's Move To Impeach Justice Yashwant Varma After SC Panel Indictment

In a rare display of bipartisan consensus, both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress have thrown their weight behind the Centre's move to explore impeachment proceedings against Allahabad High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma.

This political unity follows serious findings by a Supreme Court-appointed in-house committee, which concluded that Justice Varma was in possession of unaccounted cash at his official residence in Delhi.

With the Monsoon Session of Parliament scheduled to begin in mid-July, the government is reportedly considering the option of formally tabling the impeachment motion during the upcoming session.

Justice Varma was earlier urged to step down by the Supreme Court, following the internal committee’s damning findings. However, his refusal to resign prompted the then Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, to escalate the matter by forwarding the report to the President, recommending impeachment proceedings against the judge.
